Kazan appointed Head of the “Eurasia and Middle East” Regional Section of the International Organization “Metropolis”
Election Held in Brussels on the Eve of the 14th World Congress of Metropolis
Kazan has been appointed head of the “Eurasia and Middle East” regional section of the international organization “Metropolis.” The election took place in Brussels on the eve of the 14th Metropolis World Congress, which was held from June 12 to 15. Now, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan becomes a member of the organization’s Presidium, along with cities such as Seoul, Tehran, Montreal, São Paulo, Montevideo, and Rabat.

The Metropolis World Congress is a major international event held every three years since the association’s founding in 1984. This year’s congress coincided with the Brussels Urban Summit, bringing together representatives of 145 cities and regions.

The day before, the Metropolis General Assembly convened, where cities including Barcelona, Berlin, Istanbul, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Mexico City, Tehran, Montreal, Rabat, Montevideo, Bogotá, Hangzhou, Madrid, Johannesburg, Seoul, Wuhan, São Paulo, and others competed for leadership positions for the 2024–2026 term.
As a result, the presidency was awarded to Dakar, while Kazan was elected to lead one of the six regional sections of the organization. The goal of the regional section is to support the work of Metropolis in various regions under the leadership of the Secretary General, according to the Department of International Cooperation of the Kazan City Council.

It is worth recalling that Metropolis is a global association of major metropolitan areas and cities, representing a worldwide network that unites the governments of 141 urban agglomerations. Kazan has been a member of the international organization since 2005.

The association serves as a coordination center for urban governance expertise, working to find solutions to challenges facing large cities. It also publishes successful urban projects that can assist other cities in addressing similar issues. Metropolis functions as the metropolitan section of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) organization.
